•  Existing office accommodation consists of 2 single storey office buildings accommodating up to 75 staff which is inadequate

  It is proposed to complete the stalled HQ building to 12th floor or to a financially viable level. It is located on a 9.3 ha plot.

•  The Ground floor has been completed

•  With Kisumu having been selected to be the HQ for the Lake Victoria Basin Commission, additional office space and conference facilities will be required

•  Existing staff housing consists of:-

•  Kisumu City (24 No. 3, 2, 1 bedroomed houses at Kanyakwar & 4 No. executive houses in Milimani)

•  Lichota (7 no. 2, 1 bedroomed houses)

•  Yala Swamp (17 No. 3, 2, 1 bedroomed houses)

•  Total 63 No. houses

•  25 No. staff houses have been completed to lintel/ring beam/wall plate levels

•  Funds are required to complete the houses and sell them to staff

•  21 No. houses are 2 bedroomed while 4 No. houses are executive with servant quarters

•  The houses are located at Kanyakwar in Kisumu City on a 7.77 ha plot and are served with a borehole

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Poultry Unit ( Kisumu City )

This is a 5,000 bird capacity unit capable of producing eggs, pullets, broilers & day old chicks and other by products. It consists of 2 units each with 2,500 capacity. It also has offices and a slaughterhouse. Market for the products is available in the city and environs.

The main objective is to stimulate agricultural and hydropower development through irrigation of 20,000Ha and generation of 18MW. The estimated cost is US$ 50 million.

The on going Sondu River Hydropower project is part of this project. Its objective is to increase area under irrigation to 25,000Ha from 10,000Ha and power generation to 150MW from 60MW, when implemented.

The project is planned to generate 50 MW of electricity and irrigate up to 17,000 ha in the Nyanza Sugar belt Zone.  The project will be based on the Nyando River

This project is proposed to generate 60MW of electricity and irrigate 6,900 ha in the Kerio Valley and 11,400 ha in the Nzoia Basin based on the River Nzoia.  A feasibility study has been undertaken

Water Supply and Sanitation (Regional)

The project involves the rehabilitation of 600 community wells in Nyanza province and the construction of 150 new community wells in Busia, Bungoma and Trans Nzoia districts. An environmental management component is included. The project is estimated to cost Ksh. 290 million.

The project will involve construction of 964 water projects in 4 districts of Nyanza and 5 districts in Rift Valley. The project will procure 3 drilling machines 2 rotary and 1 percussion. The project is estimated to cost Kshs 2.8 Billion in 4 years.

Nyando River Flood Control Project (Nyando and Kisumu Districts)

The project entails the implementation of an integrated flood control project encompassing construction of dams, irrigation schemes, drainage works, river training and dredging, protection dykes and development of early warning systems.

The project entails the implementation of an integrated flood control project encompassing construction of dams, irrigation schemes, drainage works, river training and dredging, protection dykes and development of early warning systems.

Kano Plains Irrigation project (Nyando district)

This project is tied to the completion of the Sondu River Hydropower project. Feasibility studies were completed in 1992. It is estimated to cost US$ 220 million and will result in 15000 Ha being available for irrigation.

Lakeshore Irrigation Projects (Lake Victoria shores)

Through the Integrated Regional Development Master Plan, 19 suitable areas that could be developed through irrigation for horticultural development and rice have been identified along the lakeshore.  Feasibility studies should be carried out to allow for the implementation of the projects.  One such project is the Kimira Ouch Smallholder Project.  Which is being financed by the ADB at Kshs. 3 billion

Nyando River Irrigation Project (Nyando District)

The project is located on the right bank of the Nyando River and cover a total area of 4,000 ha (including the existing Ahero Irrigation Scheme).  The objective of the project is to convert the Ahero Scheme from pumped to gravity scheme.  A feasibility study has been completed.

Cement Manufacturing (Nyando)

To establish cement manufacturing plant in western Kenya so as to exploit the unutilized vast limestone resources in Koru.  Possibilities of utilizing the Homa lime resources will also be explored as well as for the manufacture of phosphate based fertilizers. To open up the East African Community and COMESA markets to our local cement.

To establish a Granite tile Manufacturing plant and Western Kenya so as to utilize the vast granite resources and reduce the costs of tiles based on transportation of boulders all the way to Nairobi.  To utilize the Granite materials in the building industry as well as in rails/road stones.  To open up the East African Community and COMESA Market to our Granite tiles.

To add Value to the Local Soap Stone industry that is currently dominated by sculpture by using the non-choice sculpture soapstone for the making of chalk, wall tiles and Sanitary wave.

To establish additional rock quarrying and Ballast Crushing units in prime areas such as the Awasi plateau so as to make it easy avail and affordability the line products for construction of buildings and roads.

Clay Drainage Pipe Production (Nyanza)

The principal raw material for the drainage pipes is basically the clays, which are available in many locations of the region such as Kano Plains, Kodera Forest, Sironga and Kapsabet.

Agro Forestry Establishment

The LBDA has established several central tree nurseries for the propagation of tree seedlings for reforestation, afforestation and forest farming by communities at Lugari, Sangalo, Chwele, Kisumu, Rae, Kokwanyo, Alupe, and Kapsabet.  Through these tree nurseries the Authority has been able to distribute over 2.5 million seedlings for catchment conservation activities in the region .

Environmental Monitoring (Regional)

The LBDA proposed to intensify environmental monitoring through sampling of water resources and sources as well as carrying out HIV/AIDS campaigns in the work place and public health education to the rural communities.

Catchment Conservation and Rehabilitation of Sondu River (Rift Valley & Nyanza Provinces)

The project entails the implementation of activities meant to ensure environmental integrity of the Sondu river catchment through afforestation, reforestation, promotion of good agricultural practices and empowering the communities to undertake alternative income generating activities that replace catchment degradation activities such as wood cutting, cultivation etc.  The project is estimated to cost Kshs. 65 million and will be financed by KENGEN as part of the Sondu River Hydropower Project.

Biodiversity Project (Rift Valley)

The objective of the project is to rehabilitate the South West Mau forest and to conserve the Kapkatet wetlands. CDTF is reviewing the proposal. The project is expected to cost Ksh. 21 million.

Eco-tourism (Regional)

The project is part of the wider Western Kenya Tourism circuit and entails the development and promotion of such sites as Huma National Park, Simbi Nyaima, Otok, God Ramogi, Kit Mikayi, Mt. Elgon, Kakamega forest etc. It is estimated to cost Ksh. 15 million and is being reviewed by the Tourist Trust Fund.

Establishment of Cruise Ship (Lake Victoria)

The KTDC has shown interest in the establishment of a cruise ship for touring Lake Victoria to exploit the West Kenya Tourism Circuit. Pre-investment studies for a joint venture with the LBDA will be undertaken.

Tannery Project (Western Kenya)

Western Kenya produces 38% of the total hides and skins in the country. Based on this a central tannery is proposed to exploit the produce for leather and related products production. The project is estimated to cost Ksh 50 million.

Instant Coffee Factory (Busia District)

The country has no facilities for producing instant coffee from robusta coffee, which does well in Siaya, Busia, Kakamega, Bungoma and South Nyanza.  Further more instant coffee is popular with tourists.

Fruit and Vegetable Canning (Western Kenya)

The LBDA is promoting horticulture in the region. Busia, Bungoma, Trans Nzoia, Kericho and Kisii produce large quantities of fruits and vegetables which can be used to make jam, marmalade and fruit juices. The project is estimated to cost Ksh 22 million.

Edible Oil Processing Factory (Suba district)

LBDA has been promoting the growing of oil seed crops (sunflower, cotton, ground nuts) for the support of an Edible Oil Processing Factory. The factory is estimated to cost Ksh 10 million.

Soybean Development Project (Western Province)

The project is for the development of soybean in Western Province. It will promote soybean growing by farmers, install soybean processing facilities and adaptive research. It is estimated to cost Ksh. 1.2 billion.

Cotton Production (Regional)

The African Growth Opportunity Act (AGOA) has renewed an interest in cotton. The LBDA is involved in cottonseed production in liaison with such bodies as Dominion Farms and KARI, for distribution to cotton farmers in the region. The LBDA proposes to go into large-scale cottonseed production with an investor. The project is expected to cost Ksh. 15 million.

The objective of the project is to introduce improved sugarcane production and processing technology to help attain self sufficiency in sugar, create employment and save foreign exchange.

Integrated Pig Farming (Nyanza & Western)

The project will be located in Vihiga or Kisii districts.  It is envisaged to encompass a large scale pig production programme by way of establishing breeding centers for distributing pigs to contract farmers and provision of extension services.  A slaughtering and meat processing plant will also be constructed.

To establish economic viability of lake-based culture trials in Lake Victoria· To popularise community participation in lake-based cultures The project is estimated to cost Kshs 5 m.

Establishment of Cold Storage Facilities (Lakeshore)

To improve fish landing beaches by providing adequate infrastructure and increase the shelf life of fish and hygienic quality thereof by providing cold storage facilities are some of the objectives of the project. The total project cost is Ksh. 800 million, but it is proposed to start with two sites at Dunga and Kendu bay for Ksh. 20 million. The Japanese Government is willing to finance the project.

Fish production by commercial farmers increased from 3tons / ha. per year to 5tons./ hatch. Per year through refocused extension access to farm inputs, provision of credit and capacity building Fish farming operated on viable sustainable business enterprises.· The project is estimated to cost Kshs 160 m.
